In the Company of Chance is a photo book about observing slowly in a fast-paced world. Photographer Karl Forsberg has, through a dedicated artistic journey, captured images that resonate with street photography but with a muted, poetic tone. The photographs possess a contemplative quality that distinguishes them from the rapid consumption of digital images, and are complemented by short, personal texts.

The book represents the culmination of a personal project to develop his method and visual expression. Over two weeks, Karl visited Kraków, Bologna, and London in turn. The journey was undertaken without any plan; he travelled, walked, and photographed – in the company of chance.

The result offers the reader a mixture of understated street photographs and aesthetic documentary images, showcasing both everyday life and unexpected moments. Alongside short, personal notes for each image, the photographs convey a subjective impression of the cities and their urban life. In the foreword, he also discusses his motivation and the artistic project that forms the material for the book.

Karl Forsberg

(b. 1961) is a Swedish photographer based in Pixbo (Gothenburg), Sweden.

Karl’s work straddles the line between documentation, aesthetics, and storytelling. Through street photography and portraiture, he explores the diversity of the bustling city, its visual language, and the unexpected encounters that emerge in the urban setting.

His process begins with a city that sparks his curiosity. He wanders its streets without a fixed plan, letting a feeling, wonder, or a hint of a story guide his steps and gaze. His photography style is instinctive and embraces chance.

The motifs he is looking for are visually striking, captivating, and contain fragments of something larger. His selection process is deliberate and thoughtful, and through image processing, he refines the essence of each photograph and infuses it with his personal tone.

His first book — In the Company of Chance — is the culmination of a personal project to refine his method and visual expression. Traversing Krakow, Bologna, and London, the reader is invited on a journey where Karl’s photographic lens reveals everyday moments and subtle details, which collectively convey a subjective impression of the cities.
